Molland is a small, quiet village on the southern edge of Exmoor, with an Inn, a shop and a church. The church is mainly 15th century and is unusual because it has 'escaped' restoration by the Victorians. The furnishings are mainly Georgian and the pews are high sided 'horse box' affairs. In 1804 the infamous hunting Parson Froude became vicar of Molland and Knowstone.
He had a reputation as a tyrant and is said to have retained a private army of tenant farmers, grooms etc. for terrorising his enemies.
The London Inn is next to the church. A 15th century former coaching Inn, this fine, small country hostelry retains its rustic charm; open log fires, inglenooks and beamed ceilings. Good ale straight from the barrel, fresh-cooked food and B&B accommodation are available.
There is a legend that during the days of John Knight, (see Simonsbath) a gang of his miners who, happily drinking a weeks wages away, were driven out of the London Inn by their angry wives who had marched from Simonsbath!
