Exmoor Zoo warns 'Thieves Beware'

Staff at a North Devon zoo plagued by thieves earlier this year hope criminals won't be tempted to try and steal their newest primates - because they might not leave the enclosure in one piece!

Keepers at Exmoor Zoo near Bratton Fleming were dismayed when a number of rare marmosets were stolen and vowed to restock with far less attractive targets.

Meet Black Howler monkeys Greeb and his partner Wings, among South America's largest and loudest primates!

The bravest would-be thief might think twice at the thought of a metre-tall monkey hanging above them by its tail while it uses all four limbs to launch an attack.

At home in the rainforests of Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and Argentina, the monkeys get their name from the loud guttural howls they use at the start of each day. Their large necks and vocal chords mean they can be heard up to three miles away - in dense jungle.

Back in the forest they grow more than a metre tall and tip the scales at 12 kilos plus.

But despite their size they are extremely agile and the strong prehensile tail means they're happy to hang around all day long!

"They have five limbs, the tails can support their entire body weight, leaving all four limbs free - and even the keepers at the zoo have installed automatic shut offs so there is no danger of staff getting on the wrong side of them," said Steve Eddy at Exmoor Zoo.

Thieves, you have been warned...

Christmas Stallholders Invited

Care Devon wishes to invite local stallholders to its annual Christmas Fayre to be held at its community at Blackerton, East Anstey, on the Saturday, November 18

Stalls specialising in locally produced arts and crafts are keenly sought to complement Care's own range of pottery, cakes & produce, textiles and woodwork exhibits.

Care Devon, along with seven other communities across England, provides residential care, work and training opportunities for adults with learning disabilities.

The site is home to 34 adults in four cottages as well as a further 13 living a more independent lifestyle at houses in nearby Bampton and South Molton, some of whom access the work and training opportunities provided at Blackerton on a daily basis.

All stallholders will receive a complimentary drink and mince pie as well as free tea/coffee throughout the day. Light lunches and other refreshments will also be available to purchase.

Stalls will cost £20 for the day, which runs from 10am until 4pm, though special deals are available for those wanting more than one stall.

To book your place or for further information, please contact Sylvia Boyles on 01398 341252 / 341292 during office hours.
