Marketing covers the wide spectrum of advertising, promotions, public relations and sales. It is the process of introducing and pushing your product or service into your target market and motivating the buying public to invest in it. Marketing should never be considered an expense, but a necessary investment - without customers, you don’t have a business.

Marketing exposes your product or service, to your key market and allows you to communicate directly with and retain your current customer base. There is almost no point to having a product if no one knows about it. Marketing is about delivering your messages at the exact time your customers need it; a combination of being in the right place at the right time with the right product.

In today’s free market, consumers have a range of options so they need encouragement to come to you and stay with you. When you’re not marketing, you can be sure your competition is, therefore your marketing strategy should remain consistent to ensure your customers stay loyal to your brand.

A plan is a means to achieving something and involves setting goals and selecting strategies. Your strategy is ‘how’ you achieve these goals. To be effective your strategy should be SMART:


The marketing strategy you create should be specific and relevant to your particular industry and customer base.You should set realistic deadlines and ensure that your goals are achievable. It’s imperative that your results are measurable - this allows you to continually reassess your strategy to make sure it’s effective, remains relevant and meets your objectives.

1 Set goals. What is your ultimate aim? E.g. Are you a new business looking to win customers or are you a specialist looking for a very specific type of customer? What do you want the marketing to achieve? Who is your target customer and which of their needs are you aiming to fulfill.
2 Analyse the current situation. A successful marketing strategy should involve extensive research to ensure you understand customers to meet their needs and wants. Working out what consumers are spending money on and when, allows you to budget, manage your cash flow carefully and measure the success of the campaign.
3 Monitoring. Constantly review your marketing strategy to ensure it’s in line with your customer demands and meets your corporate goals outlined in the initial planning stages.

A well planned marketing strategy should increase public awareness about your company’s product/service, build recognition of your brand name and, coupled with good service and after-sales care, lead to more sales and revenue growth for your organisation.
